Labor Day, marking the unofficial end of summer, falls on Monday, September 2, 2024. As students head back to school, many Americans will take advantage of the long weekend for one last summer barbecue or beach outing.
The first Monday in September celebrates the American labor movement and the significant contributions of workers to the U.S. economy. However, many will still need to handle errands, whether it's visiting the bank or picking up a last-minute grocery item.
Here’s a look at what will be open and closed on Labor Day 2024:
Retail Stores
Most major retail chains will be open. Stores under the Kroger umbrella—including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer, and Food 4 Less—will operate during regular hours. Major retailers like Walmart and Target will also be open as usual.
CVS Pharmacy locations will generally be open, although some may have reduced hours. Walgreens stores will follow their regular schedule, though many pharmacies will be closed except for 24-hour locations and a few select pharmacies.
Note that Costco will be closed for the day.
Post Office
The United States Postal Service will be closed, so no mail will be sent out on Labor Day. UPS services will be suspended, except for Express Critical, with only a few locations open. FedEx Custom Critical will be available, but FedEx Office will have limited hours.
Banks
As Labor Day is one of the 11 federal banking holidays, banks will be closed. ATMs and online banking services will still be accessible.
The U.S. stock market will be closed, with both NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange not in operation.
Government
Federal offices, including the DMV and local libraries, will be closed. State and local courts will also be closed.
